Most people understand what a Will is; typically, it is "a way to give your stuff away to people after you die." While this is true, it can serve other purposes, like transferring the right to terminate social media accounts, close out bank accounts, etc. Many people believe that if they aren't "rich" they don't need a Will. That belief is seldom true unless they have taken other steps to effectuate authority in a survivor to take care of loose ends. As an example of this, bank accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts and others may have the option of creating a "payable on death" endorsement. Such endorsements may suffice for those accounts, however they are not comprehensive. (By the way, authority under a Power of Attorney does not survive after the death of the person granting the power.) In almost all cases, a simple Will is better than no Will.

The Beneficial Owner Information Report is due for companies formed prior to 2024, no later than January 31st 2024. This is part of the Corporate Transparency Act "CTA" which was passed as part of the Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2020. The proclaimed purpose of the CTA is to require disclosure and identification of people and entities who are "Beneficial Owners" of the reporting entities. Beneficial Owners are those individuals who own, directly or indirectly, at least 25% of the ownership of the reporting entity. Ownership interests include equity, profits, convertible interests, (even if classified as debt), puts, calls, options, or other instruments, contracts, or arrangements. While there are nuances, for small companies with few shareholders, compliance is fairly simple, by filling out and filing a form online at: boiefiling.gov/fileboir. The reporting will be an ongoing annual requirement. There are reporting services that are available to file these for you (for a fee), and if you use a company accountant, they may also be able to file for you.
