There are people using AI, social media, and professional-looking websites to make themselves appear to be attorneys when they are not. Some are even charging people money for legal advice and legal services they are not licensed to provide.

In Texas, this may be the unauthorized practice of law, and it is illegal.

These schemes can be especially harmful when they target Black, Hispanic, immigrant, and other communities where people may already face barriers to finding affordable legal help.

Before paying someone for legal services, verify that the person is actually licensed to practice law. A professional-looking website, social media page, or AI-generated content does not make someone an attorney.

If you paid someone who falsely represented that they were an attorney or charged you for legal services they were not authorized to provide, consider demanding your money back and reporting what happened.

There is a LOT of misinformation about credit card debt lawsuits and what actually happens in court.

Being sued for a credit card debt does not automatically mean you owe everything the plaintiff says you owe. It also does not mean the plaintiff automatically wins.

Debt cases are lawsuits. Like any other lawsuit, the plaintiff has to prove its case.

Depending on the facts, there may be defenses involving the debt itself, the amount claimed, the evidence offered, the identity of the party suing, limitations, payments or credits, or other legal issues.

The problem is that many people do not know what defenses may apply to their case or how to properly present them in court.

That is where an attorney can make a difference. An attorney can review the lawsuit, identify possible defenses, evaluate the plaintiffā€™s evidence, and properly raise legal issues before the court.

And one of the most important things to remember: Do not ignore a lawsuit. Even if you believe the debt is wrong, too old, already paid, or not yours, failing to respond can result in a default judgment.

There is a lot of bad information online about debt lawsuits. Before assuming you have no options, learn your rights and understand the court process.

Many people know me as an attorney, but before law school I worked in the oilfield as a drilling fluid engineer for a large oilfield service company and also as an oilfield health, safety, and environmental consultant.

Some of the people reading this were there with me. We worked long hours, spent time on drilling locations, and saw firsthand the challenges and risks that come with the job. That experience has stayed with me throughout my legal career.

When I speak with an injured oilfield worker today, I bring more than legal knowledge. I also bring an understanding of the industry that comes from having been there. I know the pace of the work, the importance of doing a job safely, and the realities that workers face every day. That perspective is something relatively few personal injury attorneys have.

AI is a fantastic tool for learning, brainstorming ideas, and even making fun graphics like this one. What it canā€™t do is know all the facts of your case, understand every exception to the law, or appreciate the nuances and strategy that can make or break a legal claim.

And one more thing: please donā€™t upload confidential case documents, medical records, emails, or text messages into AI without talking to your attorney first. Sharing that information with third-party AI tools may create privacy concerns and could affect attorney-client confidentiality or privilege.
