DWU Fraud Alert Update please read:

Mayor and City Councilmembers,

Attached and embedded below please find the memorandum regarding fraudulent phone calls and text messages to Dallas Water Utilities customers.

The purpose of this memorandum is to share information on recent fraudulent phone calls and text messages being made primarily to Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) customers. We have received telephone calls from multiple customers sharing that they are receiving phone calls and text messages in both English and Spanish claiming to be from DWU. The phone number appears as 214-651-1441 and is labeled as Dallas Water. This phone number is the actual Water Customer Service main number. In the phone call or text message, the automated system is advising that the customer is past due on their account and they must make a payment to avoid a disconnection. The recipients of these messages are being asked to make a payment either over the phone or through the text message payment link.

Dallas Water Utilities does not call customers before service disconnections as disconnection notices are distributed by postal mail. DWU also does not take payment over the phone with a live person. Payments over the phone are made through the Interactive Voice Response system to protect the customer’s personal financial data.

As of today, DWU has reported this to the Financial Crimes Unit of the Dallas Police Department and are working closely with them. DWU has updated the City of Dallas, Dallas Water Utilities, ePay and social media websites with an advisory of the fraudulent phone calls and text messages. The Communications, Outreach, and Marketing Department will also send out email/text message alerts to residents who have signed up to get updates from the City. Please also feel free to post the fraudulent advisory to your social media sites to assist with the outreach on this matter.
