Barbra’s career in the real estate related industry started in 1980 when she accepted a position With Lane Company as a leasing agent for a 200 unit all adult luxury apartment community in Birmingham, Alabama, within 30 days Barbra was promoted to the property manager’s position and a 22 year career in property management evolved. Within 2 years after becoming a property manager for Lane Company Barbra was asked to join the Fire Fighter Training Team which traveled the Southeast assisting startup on new multi-family acquisitions which involved evaluating the current on site staff, making any changes to staff that was necessary, motivating and training the on-site staff to the new companies policies and procedures and implementing a turnaround strategy in order to get the property leased up and producing a positive NOI. Barbra said “I never thought about being a real estate agent the first few years I was in property management but legislation was pushing very hard in the 80’s to change the laws which would require all property managers to be licensed agents”. Being proactive Barbra seized the opportunity to become a licensed realtor in 1986, even though the laws were never passed, and then went on to be a licensed Broker in 1989. After 22 years in the corporate world of property management Barbra took the leap to become self-employed in order to utilize her real estate license to its fullest by forming Barbra Curtiss Realty, Inc. Barbra’s Real estate career took an immediate direction towards the Default Servicing Industry when Barbra became a listing broker for the VA. In 2002 REO was not looked upon favorably by other agents as it is today. Barbra met many negative obstacles where other agents thought it was not cool to “make a living upon the hardship of others” and ironically all of these agents are now REO Experts. Barbra was always amazed when banks and asset management companies would call asking for help and when Barbra would ask how the caller heard about her their reply was “you are the only one that called us back.” Due to the continued high level of service Barbra has provided to her clients and real estate peers, Barbra is one of the most respected REO brokers in the nation today and always willing and honored to help anyone in the real estate industry nationwide”. Barbra grew up in Huntsville Alabama which back in the 1950's was a small farming town. She says “Being one of four daughters born to a farmer, we grew up working as if we were sons. I loved working in the fields with my Dad! The smell of the outdoors, especially in the spring when the rich ground was broke for spring planting. The sweet smell of wild honeysuckle in the summer air and the smell of fresh cotton in the fall as it was picked and headed for the huge cotton gins will always be some of my most cherished memories. Farm life was not easy but it taught me never to be afraid of hard work and it set deep rooted values that have been priceless through my career". Mother, grandmother, wife, avid outdoorsman and accomplished business woman Barbra is as much at home in the conference room as she is out on Lake Lanier fishing with her husband. Typically buying a home is a long stressful process, this experience was no exception! The only saving grace was our Realtor Angel Coleman Bond. My girlfriend and I searched for programs that would help us save as much money as possible when buying a home. Everyone knows it’s not exactly cheap when entering the home buying market but any money saved would definitely help out. Well, we decided to go with the program NACA which was a nightmare all on its own. Naca requires you to go to meeting after meeting and turn in countless documents, sometimes the same document three and four times just to simply qualify for the program. Fast forward almost a year later we are finally qualified and ready to start looking. (Yes, it took almost an entire year to get qualification from NACA) we got our budget and Angel emailed us properties multiple times a day until we found ones we wanted to check out. After getting serious about a particular property the show finally started. Naca required a 45-day closing process which was the first hurdle we had to clear but Angel got the seller to agree to the longer than normal closing period. Naca drug their feet and was nowhere near finished with its end of the closing process and Angel had to preform magic trick after magic trick to get the seller to agree to extend our closing period. NACA turned a 45-day closing into a 60-day closing. Now normally you’d simply lose your Ernest money however Angel didn’t allow that to happen! Down to the last hour of this long stressful closing period Angel fought to make it happen, had I gone with any other agent I would still be house hunting but Angel is literally heaven sent. If you want an Agent that’s determined and not afraid to fight for you then Angel Coleman is the agent for you. We cannot thank her enough for navigating us through this process even when we were ready to give up, she never took her gloves off.
