One of the biggest misconceptions in estate planning is that a trust is a single document designed to solve every problem.
In reality, "trust" is a broad term that describes a legal arrangement used to hold and manage assets. Different types of trusts can be used for different purposes, such as avoiding probate, protecting beneficiaries, planning for incapacity, managing assets for minor children, or preserving family wealth.
The question is not simply, "Do I need a trust?"
The better question is, "What am I trying to accomplish, and is a trust the right tool to help me achieve that goal?"
Understanding the purpose behind a trust is often more important than understanding the trust itself.
