This one is personal.
When I was growing up, my uncle experienced periods of homelessness while living with schizophrenia. He was brilliant, but consistent access to medication, treatment and support wasn’t always available.
My family didn’t have much, but our mother taught us to recognize how fortunate we were—and to help people facing even greater hardships. We volunteered in soup kitchens, shelters and community programs. Those experiences have stayed with me.
Seven years ago, Bruce Corwin of the Bourbon Brotherhood introduced us to Melissa Raley at the Coalition for the Homeless. Her passion made it impossible not to get involved. Legacy began supporting the Bourbon Mixer and later joined the Coalition’s board.
According to HUD’s 2024 count, 5,231 Kentuckians were experiencing homelessness—including 391 veterans and 1,126 people in families with children.
Behind every statistic is a neighbor, parent, child or veteran. A safe home is something many of us are fortunate enough to take for granted.
