A good day in Apalachicola.

Last Thursday I drove over with my assistant Corrine Maro and my friend David F. Harvey to spend the day meeting the people who keep Franklin County running.

We visited with Sheriff A.J. Smith, Mayor Brenda Ash, and the Honorable J. Gordon Shuler, County Court Judge. Every one of them took real time with us, and we're grateful for the welcome.

When you open an office in a community you didn't grow up in, you can either wait for people to come find you or you can go introduce yourself. We chose the second one. You learn more about a place in an afternoon of conversations than you do in a month behind a desk.

We finished at the Owl Cafe, right across the street from our office. If you haven't had the duck fries, fix that.

Thank you to Sheriff Smith, Mayor Ash, and Judge Shuler for the time — and to Franklin County for continuing to make us feel at home!

Sopchoppy Depot Days.

We set up in the park, talked to a lot of good folks, and rolled the Bronco through the car parade alongside everything from a ‘50s convertible to — no joke — a Cybertruck. Sopchoppy contains multitudes.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the tent to say hello, ask a question, or just tell us about your family. Those conversations are the whole reason we show up to these things. We’re not there to sell anybody anything. We’re there because this is how you actually get to know a community.

A second piece for the Apalachicola office.

We picked up a reproduction of the 1837 map “City of Apalachicola and Its Environs” — published by the Apalachicola Land Company and lithographed in New York by P.A. Mesier, the same shop that produced the waterfront print now hanging across the room.

What’s remarkable is how much of it you’d still recognize. The inset shows the original city plan, a one mile square, laid out on a grid, with Washington Square anchoring the center and Franklin, Madison, and City Squares arranged around it. Those squares are still there. So are the street names: Water, Commerce, Market, Chestnut, Cypress, Bay.

The main map runs from St. Joseph’s Bay east across St. George Sound. You can find East Point, St. Vincent Island, the mouth of the river, and dozens of tall ships anchored offshore because in 1837, Apalachicola was one of the busiest ports on the Gulf.

Someone sat down almost 190 years ago and drew what this place was going to be. Then people built it, and it’s still standing.

That’s not a bad thing for an estate planning attorney to look at every day. Plans made carefully outlast the people who made them.

It hangs now in our office on the second floor of the historic Post Office and Customs House.
