One of the quickest ways to make a bad impression in court? Ditching proper etiquette. Understanding a few basic courtroom etiquette tips can make a big difference in how the court perceives you.

✔️ “Yes, Your Honor”
✔️ “No, Your Honor”
✔️ “Yes, sir/ma’am”
✔️ “No, sir/ma’am”

The courtroom isn’t the place to learn etiquette the hard way. Respect, professionalism, and preparation matter.

🌟ATTORNEY SPOTLIGHT🌟

John Strauss is a product of Newton County, having moved here at the age of 4 when his father became the Alcovy Circuit’s first District Attorney. John attended Newton County schools and graduated from Newton County High School in Georgia’s first “Million Dollar Class.” Thereafter, he graduated from the University of Georgia’s undergraduate (1990) and law school (1993) programs, and John began practicing in Covington in 1993 in the same building Strauss & Dunn now occupies – one that John helped remodel in the 1980s while still in high school.

During a career spanning over three decades, John has conducted civil and criminal jury trials in courtrooms throughout the state, securing numerous acquittals for his wrongly accused clients and successful verdicts for his aggrieved civil clients.

John is married to Teresa Strauss, and they share five children and eight grandchildren.

From his deep ties to Newton County to his decades of courtroom experience, John’s dedication to his clients and community remains at the heart of everything he does. John’s extensive trial experience, proven results, and unwavering dedication to his clients have earned him the trust of individuals and families throughout Georgia.

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they mean very different things:

🚔 Detained – Law enforcement temporarily restricts your freedom while they investigate a situation. You are not under arrest, but you may not be free to leave.

❓Questioned – Police ask you questions about an incident. Whether you’re a witness, a person of interest, or a suspect, what you say can matter.

🚓 Arrested – Law enforcement takes you into custody because they believe there is probable cause that a crime has been committed.

👨‍⚖️ Charged – A prosecutor formally accuses you of a crime. An arrest does not automatically mean charges will be filed.

Understanding the difference is important because each stage comes with different rights and different legal implications.

If you or a loved one is facing a criminal investigation, arrest, or charges, don’t wait to seek legal guidance. Call Strauss & Dunn.
