Happy belated Independence Day! If you still have one of my campaign signs, please place it in your yard from now until the day after the Election.
As we enter yet another voting season, I wanted to provide you with an update on what has been accomplished so far in my first six months on the bench for General Sessions and Juvenile Court, and thank you for all of the support that put me here.
First, “Night Court” continues to be well received and has afforded those with traffic violations to handle their matter without also having to take time off from work. Night Court continues to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.
I am proud to report that Recovery Court is up and running with our new Recovery Court Director, Ms. Gracie Jones. I also want to mention our Team Members, without whom our efforts would be most difficult. ADA Stephanie Draughon for the District Attorney’s Office, Attorney Frank DesLauriers for the Public Defender’s Office, Probation officers Penny Goracke, Jeff Fletcher, and Xavier Richardson. We are also contracted with Hope Restored Counseling, which provides valuable services to our participants.
Local Rules for the Tipton County Juvenile Court have been filed, published and went into effect July 1, 2024. Local Rules for the Tipton County General Sessions Court are drafted and I anticipate will go in effect in a few weeks.
The Court continues to face challenges in the area of juvenile detention, but we are routinely entering contracts with various detention centers across the state with the most recent being with Putnam County Juvenile Detention. I am working with Mayor Huffman and the County Commissioners as we explore options to address this growing problem.
The Court continues to address the issue of setting bonds for criminal defendants. I hope to add judicial commissioners to assist with these efforts, and I thank Mayor Huffman and the County Commissioners for acknowledging the challenges the Court faces in this area and assisting the Court in finding a viable solution. Additionally, I want to thank Senator Rose and Representative Moody for their ongoing support as I endeavor to improve our courts for the benefit of Tipton Countians.
I look forward to the challenges ahead as I seek more ways to serve our county and improve our courts.
Reminder: Early voting begins Friday, July 12, 2024 and ends Saturday, July 27, 2024. Thursday, August 1, 2024 is election day for the State and Federal Primary and State and County General Elections.
Again, I want to thank each and every one of you for your vote again on August 1st.
Sincerely, Judge M.O. Eckel, III
