The lawsuit involving Yellowstone and the proposed series Sovereign Nation raises an interesting question:

I recently discussed the case on Newsradio WOOD, breaking down what creators and businesses need to understand about protecting creative work.

One important distinction is that copyright generally protects the expression of an idea, not the idea itself. So the key question isn’t simply whether two stories are similar. It’s whether protected creative elements were actually copied.

As The Patent Professor®, I’m always looking at the line between creativity, ownership, and intellectual property.

How Losing Our Biggest Client Became a Growth Opportunity

Getting fired by your biggest client hurts.

I know because it happened to me.

At the time, it felt like a major setback. But looking back, it became one of the most valuable lessons in my journey as The Patent Professor®.

It forced me to take a hard look at our firm, our client experience, and how we could do better.

Instead of letting the loss define us, we used it as motivation to improve, grow, and build a stronger firm.

I recently shared this story in a conversation with Moshe Rosenblum-Amsel, CPA, MBA, about why sometimes losing a client can lead to finding a better path forward.

It doesn’t.

“Patent pending” simply means a patent application has been filed.

But is it provisional or non-provisional? Is it a utility or design patent?

And what does that actually mean for the business or investor?
