Summer visits can be a meaningful time to check in with aging parents or loved ones, especially if you notice changes in health, mobility, memory, or independence.

These conversations are not always easy, but they can make a major difference.

Ask simple questions like:
Do you have updated legal documents?
Who would make decisions if you could not?
Have you thought about long-term care costs?
Could Veterans Benefits or Medicaid planning help?

You do not need to have every answer right away. Starting the conversation is the first step.

Friedman Elder Law & Estate Planning Department is here to help families plan with care and confidence.

Many people think elder law only means preparing a will, but it often goes much deeper.

Elder law helps seniors and their families prepare for real-life issues like long-term care costs, Medicaid planning, Veterans Benefits, asset protection, incapacity planning, and making sure trusted people can step in when needed.

The goal is not just to create documents. The goal is to protect dignity, independence, savings, and peace of mind.

Our team helps families throughout Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, and the State of Florida understand their options before a crisis happens.

As May comes to a close, take a moment to check in on the legal planning pieces that often get pushed aside.

Before summer begins, ask yourself:

Are our estate planning documents current?
Have beneficiaries been reviewed recently?
Do our loved ones know our care wishes?
Is anyone in the family eligible for veterans benefits?
Have we planned for possible long-term care costs?
Do the right people have legal authority to help if needed?

These questions can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to answer them alone. A clear legal plan can help protect your family, your wishes, and your peace of mind.

Probate is the court process used to administer certain assets after someone passes away. For families, it can sometimes mean delays, added costs, and extra stress during an already emotional time.

The good news is that thoughtful Florida estate planning may help reduce or avoid probate for certain assets.

Depending on your situation, planning tools may include a revocable living trust, properly updated beneficiary designations, a Lady Bird Deed, or reviewing how accounts and property are titled.

The key is making sure everything works together. A will alone does not always avoid probate.

If you want to make things easier for your loved ones, now is the time to review your plan.

Long-term care planning is one of the most important conversations a family can have, but it is also one of the easiest to delay.

Most people do not want to imagine needing help with daily care. But planning ahead can make a significant difference in the options available later.

Whether care happens at home, in assisted living, or in a nursing facility, families should understand the legal, financial, and benefit-related issues involved.

A strong plan may include powers of attorney, health care documents, estate planning, Medicaid planning, veterans benefits planning, and asset protection strategies.

The earlier you start, the more options you may have.

Older Americans Month 2026 is centered on the theme “Champion Your Health,” which encourages prevention, wellness, informed decisions, and independence.

Legal planning plays an important role in that bigger picture.

Health decisions, caregiving needs, financial management, long-term care, and end-of-life wishes are all easier to navigate when the right documents and legal plans are already in place.

Planning ahead helps protect your ability to make choices, name trusted decision-makers, and reduce the burden on loved ones if your health changes.

Healthy aging is not only about medical care. It is also about making sure your wishes are known, respected, and legally supported.

Many families wait until they are already in crisis to call an elder law attorney.

But planning is often most powerful before a crisis happens.

You may want to speak with an elder law attorney if a loved one has received a new diagnosis, needs help at home, is moving into assisted living, may need nursing home care, has outdated legal documents, or has family members unsure who has authority to make decisions.

Elder law planning can help families understand their legal options, protect assets where possible, plan for care costs, and reduce confusion during stressful transitions.

You do not have to wait until everything feels urgent.

In honor of Armed Forces Day weekend, we are highlighting an important benefit many families do not know enough about: VA Aid & Attendance.

Aid & Attendance is an added VA pension benefit for eligible veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities, are bedridden, live in a nursing home due to disability, or meet certain vision-related requirements. The VA also notes that Aid & Attendance and Housebound benefits cannot be received at the same time.

For many families, this benefit may help offset the cost of care at home, in assisted living, or in a nursing facility.

If you or a loved one served, it is worth asking whether benefits may be available.

Call (954) 866-1055 or visit www.elderlawdept.com to learn how we help Florida veterans and families navigate the process.
