Every year, the American Bar Association commemorates May 1st and the entire month to the practice of Law. Law Day haa been a visible part of American legal culture since President Dwight D. Eisenhower established it in 1958 to celebrate the rule of law in a free society. Eisenhower, a former five-star Army general during World War II, saw first-hand what happens when the rule of law breaks down.
Law Day provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. As a practicing attorney, it is especially meaningful to commemorate this day as a way to reflect on how far our legal system has progressed, while recognizing the continued responsibility we share to shape and strengthen it for the future.
