12 years ago today, I opened The Law Office of Zachary L. Boyd. I remember that day vividly. Day 1 and Zero Clients. Fast forward 12 years, and today I’m in Federal Court in Waco, District Court in Coryell County, District Court in Lampasas County, and District Court and County Court at Law in Bell County. That’s a day! When I slow down, I plan on celebrating.

So very much to be thankful for over these past dozen years— I absolutely love what I do, where I do it, and the people I do it with— my Employees (they are really part of my family), the Courts, the Judges, the Court Staff, the Coordinators, the Clerks, the Deputy Clerks, the District Attorneys, the Assistant District Attorneys, the County Attorneys, the Assistant County Attorneys, the United States Attorneys, the Assistant United States Attorneys, and some (but not all) Special Assistant United States Attorneys (there’s one that has recently distinguished himself as the worst attorney I have ever met —although I’m sure there are worse that I have yet to encounter), the Court Reporters, the Courtroom Deputies, the U.S. Marshals, the Interpreters, other members of the local bars in the jurisdictions in which I practice, my mentors, my family, my loved ones (that I consider family even if they aren’t by blood), my clients, and each of the communities in which I practice.

Time for this trial lawyer to get on the road, ride the circuit, and practice some law. Gonna go Walking in Memphis now....

Becoming Ultra. When running a marathon isn’t enough, there’s ultra. You choose to embrace the challenge, endure the distance, and overcome any adversity that comes up. In so doing, you learn a great deal about yourself. When you cross that finish line 50 miles later, you have become Ultra.

I have often felt this but don't think that I have ever adequately put it to words or explanation so well. Or maybe I have, and folks just don't get, don't want to get it, or are just indifferent. At any rate, I just started reading a new book, came across this in the introduction, and wanted to share this quote. To me, at least, it is profound. Mercy. Just mercy.

"We are all implicated when we allow other people to be mistreated. An absence of compassion can corrupt the decency of a community, a state, a nation. Fear and anger can make us vindictive and abusive, unjust and unfair, until we all suffer from the absence of mercy and we condemn ourselves as much as we victimize others. The closer we get to mass incarceration and extreme levels of punishment, the more I believe it’s necessary to recognize that we all need mercy, we all need justice, and—perhaps—we all need some measure of unmerited grace."
