Before there was a Constitution, there was a declaration.

On July 4, 1776, 56 individuals approved a document that fundamentally changed the course of history. The Declaration of Independence wasn't just a statement of separation—it was a carefully argued legal case.

Rather than simply announcing independence, it laid out a reasoned argument built on principles of natural rights, government accountability, and the idea that laws derive their authority from the consent of the governed. More than two dozen grievances against the British Crown were included, creating a documented justification for a decision that would shape a nation.

Nearly 250 years later, the Declaration remains a reminder that words matter. The way ideas are written, argued, and preserved can influence generations.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we're grateful for the enduring principles of liberty, justice, and the rule of law that continue to guide our country.

We’re excited to welcome Kosta Zrnic and Jessica “JJ” Jones to Akerly Law as our
Summer Law Clerks.

Kosta is currently attending George Washington University Law School
after completing his undergraduate studies at GWU as well. He brings a
thoughtful, driven approach and has already fit right in with the
team.

A few things we’ve learned about Kosta so far:
• Coffee > tea
• Tennis fan
• In-N-Out is the fast food choice
• True Detective makes the watch list
• Apparently Smarties are still in the candy rankings

JJ is currently attending Texas Tech University School of Law after
completing her undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University. She’s
already brought great energy, curiosity, and personality to the
office.

A few things we’ve learned about JJ so far:
• Coffee is non-negotiable
• Cane’s ranks high on the food scale
• Football to watch, wake surfing to do
• Suits and Vampire Diaries both somehow made the list
• Chocolate is the correct candy answer

We’re glad to have these two with us this summer and look forward to seeing
what they accomplish their future careers!

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Originally established to honor fallen Civil War soldiers, the day has become a national moment of remembrance for all American service members who gave their lives in defense of others.

Their sacrifice secured freedoms we often take for granted, and their courage will never be forgotten.

From Bruce and the entire Akerly Law team, we extend our deepest gratitude to our fallen heroes and their families.

We remember.
