Help! 2 out of 5 colors have been chosen and executed but I’m struggling with my next 2 choices and you guys had tons of suggestions for my exterior so I thought I would seek out your help on this one. I’m looking for 2 coordinating beige or maybe even greige colors. One lighter closer to the white family and one darker. I fear pink or purple undertones of any kind. With the block features of the home it wouldn’t hurt to have some gray undertones but I really want it to read warm and not hit you in your face gray When in doubt I usually lean toward green undertones. I want it to feel like a warm soft hug. Whatcha got?

Continuing our theme of doors this week- here is a design hack for ya! Raise your hand if you live in an old home with plain flat-panel doors? Do you suffer from door envy when you visit your friends' homes? Have you thought about replacing your doors but then hesitated due to the hassle or cost? Well, have I got a solution for you!!! You can spice up your old flat panel doors by adding thin paneling (post for another day) or cutting a design into your existing doors (read on). For my new house I was wanting a vertical plank look for the interior doors but when I started shopping around I could not justify the upgraded cost for this style door so I decided to order flat panel doors and create the look myself. (Notice the cost difference in a flat panel slab vs vertical plank slab on Home Depot's website). Now remember from my previous post, I thought I was ordering solid core doors so I was 100% confident this plan to cut lines in the door would work, my confidence level plummeted when I realized I actually received hollow-core doors. But ladies and gentleman, I’m here to report that my talented friend Erica proved that with a shallow set router you can achieve the door of your dreams even with a hollow core door. Same look, fraction of the cost!

Unpopular design decision that was an accident, but never really bothered me: hollow-core doors. Confession- I have always ordered hollow-core doors for all my projects. I am always mindful of the style but never gave the hollowness a second thought. Until one day I saw a post from a designer I follow on social media stating that hollow-core doors make a house look cheap and that she would NEVER use them on one of her projects- and just like that I began to doubt every design choice I ever made. I vowed forevermore I would never cheapin a house again with hollow-core doors- starting with mine! So when it was time to order doors for the new house I proudly placed my order for SOLID-core doors with my friendly ridout rep and waited for the day those life-changing doors would arrive. When they were delivered I was surprised that they did not seem significantly heavier than what I was used to so I double checked the invoice and confirmed it said “solid-core” doors on the ticket. It did, so I just chalked the ease at which I moved the doors around the house to the obvious strength I had gained through my ironman training. 💪🏼 After all the doors were spread out I discovered I was missing one so I called my rep to order one more Solid-core door. It was when this last door came in that I discovered that my first batch of doors were not solid after all. Now granted it was not because they LOOKED any different, it was just that the solid WAS INDEED significantly heavier. Unfortunately at this point all the first batch of doors had been installed and while the invoice said “solid” I was charged for “hollow” so I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle or cost to replace. And honestly aesthetically I can’t tell a difference! So unless you have a tendency to punch or kick holes in your doors I just truly don’t see the big advantage in solid over hollow. But just in case everyone knows something I don’t, I’m going to pretend that it takes a lot more strength and effort to open and shut my new doors than it really does. What about you? Do you care what is or isn’t on the inside of your door? Do you think solid is worth the investment? Did I ruin my house??

It’s an exciting but terrifying week at the new house. The painting team has ascended, which means I can no longer put off choosing my final color palette. For the exterior, I want a chameleon color —a color that changes hue throughout the day with the rise and fall of the sun. A color that makes one wonder, “What color is that?” I’m hoping to find a green that sometimes moonlights as a brown or gray. Crossing my fingers, I choose the right one!!!!

Well, no projects have reached a picture-worthy stage inside the new house, so I thought I’d go ahead and share another “unpopular design decision” post with you! These have become my favorites because I love reading your comments, and I hope you are inspired to make “unpopular” design choices for your own home that best meet YOUR family’s wants, needs, and/or desires. Today I’m talking about the orientation of our home. I love, love, love that the Conway Trail system runs through our lot. We feel so blessed to live in a city that invests in our parks and trails- encouraging community as well as health and wellness. I feel like living on the trail means the whole city is our neighbor! Because the trail is my favorite feature of our land, I wanted the front of our home to face the trail. So rather than following the norm and having the front of our home face the road, Country Club gets the side view, and the front is reserved for those out enjoying the trail. Here is a progress pic of that trail view.

Interior progress at the new house has been moving at a snail’s pace due to some construction drama, but last weekend I got to spend some time with the best parents in the world prepping some white oak lumber for a few special projects. If you have ever had the pleasure of working with white oak, you know it is a true HARD wood and is heavy and can be challenging to work with. I came prepared to spend hours sending board after board thru the planer but was blown away to find that my parents had knocked out all the really hard work before I arrived. I ended up spending my time with the palm sander while Dad worked on joining boards for counter and table tops and Mom assisted. I do not take for granted how blessed I am to have parents who are always willing to help and I look forward to seeing their handiwork throughout our new home- especially because Dad told me multiple times this will be the “last time he works with white oak.”

I reserve the right to change my mind, but here is a sneak peek of the color story I’m leaning
toward for the new house. If the interior had a Merle Norman seasonal color analysis
performed, she would be deemed a “Fall.”

Definitely more moody than my previous homes!

How about another unpopular design decision for the new house post? Turns out I’ve got a ton of these!

Today’s episode is….. Fixed glass. When designing our new home I knew I wanted lots of windows which often means lots of $$$. To help keep the window budget down I made the decision to go with fixed glass. A fixed glass window means it does not open. All window manufacturers offer this option at a cost savings to operable but I took the savings even further by choosing to make our own window stops and having my long time favorite glass company- Affordable Glass, cut 1” Lowe/clear Annealed and tempered glass for the open spaces. To meet code I splurged on Pella casement windows with special egress hinges for all the bedroom windows and windows that faced country club road. With my Lowes Pro discount Pella ended up being the most affordable option that could get me the height window I wanted with the special egress hinge I needed to keep our building code inspector happy. I realize not being able to open the vast majority of our windows might be unpopular to some, and never having the opportunity to throw open my kitchen window for woodland creatures to come sit on my shoulder as seen in so many disney fairytales does make me a little sad; BUT besides the once a year I open my office window to hear the kids at Margarette Van Elementary play at their field day I NEVER open our current windows so I feel like it was the right decision for us. What about you? Do you open your windows?

Earlier this week, I posted about the “Messy Girl” aesthetic and its admirable traits. Today, I thought I would address the other end of that
spectrum- the “Clean Girl” aesthetic. Despite my love and appreciation of the maximalist style of the messy girl, my own home and go-to decorating style leans more minimalist aka “Clean Girl.” I personally struggle with
decorating, so to be honest, embracing a minimalist aesthetic is more in my comfort zone. A quick tour of my home will reveal that the interesting features of my home come more from design vs decor. I have zero traditional art or decorations on my walls; rather, I was intentional about making functional items decorative.
Examples: the blanket hooks, the
family verse sliding door, the open shelves.

All other noteworthy moments in our home were designed into the home during construction not added with decoration, thus will stay with the home when we move on. Here is the craziest thing: while my “messy girl” friend’s home never seems messy, I swear if any shoes are left at the bottom of the stairs or a dish gets left
out of the dishwasher, my house feels messy! What is that about?!?! What about you? Is your home more team messy or clean or somewhere in between?
