TWO SIMPLE STEPS TO END UP IN A DIVORCE

We thought we would be helpful this morning and share with you a very simple two step process to insure you end up in a divorce.

Step One: BE A TERRIBLE HUMAN BEING! A good start is to act like a jerk, be unkind, cuss, yell, and scream, let addiction take over your life, be dishonest and unfaithful, be physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive, be as selfish as you can and try to put your own needs and desires above your spouse and children, let your spouse do all the heavy lifting in the family, finally sprinkle in some lack of communication, silent treatment, and withholding affection.

Step Two: Next, deny that you have any issues or problems whatsoever, refuse to change or get help, refuse to apologize or fix things, lack any desire to work on or improve your behavior or marriage, and above all be sure to blame your spouse or your kids or others for you behavioral shortcomings, and then continue on in your patterns of behavior until your spouse can't take it anymore.

Well, there you have it! Two simple steps to divorce!

If your marriage looks like the photo below then this post may be for you. Most divorces result from a handful of the same old "seven deadly sins" so to speak. These include drugs or alcohol abuse, infidelity of one kind or another, disagreements regarding finances, and abuse of one kind or another. After practicing divorce law for 14 years we have accumulated a few suggestions on how to avoid having to hire us and we are glad to share these five pro tips with you.

1. Date your spouse! Weekly date nights are a must. Get away from the kids, the dirty laundry, dishes, and stresses of life and enjoy some time together.

2. Communication is key! Tell your spouse you love them. Tell them how much you appreciate the things they do to contribute to your partnership. Write a love note on occassion. Take time each day to ask about their day and genuinely listen. Share you dreams, goals, and frustrations. Take time to just talk.

3. Be faithful! This means loyalty. Never betray your spouse or engage in infidelity of any kind including financially, emotionally, or physically. You chose them. Love is a choice. Whenever I hear "we just fell out of love" as if you caught a cold, or tripped over a log, I cringe. This shifts responsibility for your relationship away from you and diminishes the power of your choices.

4. Be less selfish! Perform acts of kindness for your spouse. Put their needs ahead of your own. Pull your weight in the relationship. Ask what you can do to help if you're not sure.

5. If there's a problem fix it! Most of us spend more time, money, and effort working on our cars, our houses, or our hobbies than we do our marriages. Great marriages don't happen by magic. They take work! Hard work! If you need to apologize, do it! If you need counseling get it! If rehab is necessary, go!

Hopefully these tips will help before feelings and attitudes get to the point portrayed in the meme below.

Happy Veteran's Day to all who have so faithfully served our country. We owe a great debt to them all. Jared and I especially want to show appreciation for our grandfathers who served in WWII and to all our other family members who have bravely served.
