Big news.

Jonathan Felkel has agreed to plead guilty to a federal hate crime for what he did to my client, Jarvis McKenzie.

For those who have been following this case, last July, Jarvis was just standing outside his neighborhood waiting for his ride to work. Felkel drove up, fired a rifle at him, and yelled “You better keep running, boy.” He later told investigators he did it because Jarvis is Black.

Felkel will now be pleading guilty in federal court and will do time in federal prison. He will face sentencing soon.

I want to thank everyone who has supported Jarvis and his family through this. And I want to thank the federal prosecutors, the FBI, and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department for taking this case seriously from day one.

But I also want to say this, we only got here because the federal government stepped in. South Carolina still doesn’t have a hate crime law. We’re one of two states in the entire country. That has to change.

Jarvis said it best, “This plea doesn’t erase what I went through. But it shows that hate can have consequences.”

We’re not done fighting. Sentencing is still ahead. And we’re going to keep pushing for a state hate crime law so that the next victim doesn’t have to wait for federal intervention to get justice.

The relentless pursuit of justice and accountability is the only standard.

“But Tyler Bailey, a Columbia attorney who represents the alleged victim in the case, Jarvis McKenzie, told reporters outside the federal courthouse that his client wants Felkel kept behind bars until the case is resolved. Earlier this month, McKenzie revealed his identity during a press conference at Bailey’s office.”

A white Richland County SC man charged with a federal hate crime against a Black man has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bond.

We are heartbroken for the family of 12-year-old Jaysen Carr, whose tragic passing has deeply impacted our community. Earlier this month, Jaysen contracted Naegleria fowleri after swimming in a South Carolina lake.

It is with deep sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of 12-year-old Jaysen Carr, who tragically passed away on July 18 after contracting Naegleria fowleri, a rare brain infection, while swimming in Lake Murray.

Jaysen was a bright and beloved student at Hand Middle School. His loss is unimaginable, and our hearts are with his family as they grieve their son and search for answers.

The Carr family is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love from the community and for the dedicated care provided by the doctors and nurses at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in the Midlands.

As their legal team, we stand beside this family not only to seek the truth, but to help ensure no other family endures a loss like this.

We ask that you keep the Carrs in your thoughts and prayers and respect their privacy as they prepare to lay Jaysen to rest.

We are standing with our client, Jeremy Evans, who was among the victims shot during the horrific mass shooting aboard a charter boat in Little River over Memorial Day weekend. Jeremy is now recovering from surgery and facing a long road of physical and emotional healing.

At our press conference, we made it clear: this tragedy was preventable. While there were individuals patting people down, there was no trained security on board. Alcohol was served without proper ID checks, creating an unsafe environment for everyone present.

Our firm is conducting an independent investigation and will be taking legal action to hold every responsible party accountable. We owe that to Jeremy and every person affected by this senseless act of violence.

We commend the Horry County Police Department for their efforts and will continue to pursue justice on behalf of our client and the community.

This isn’t just about one incident it’s about protecting people and demanding accountability where it's long overdue.
