My dad, Dr. John Duffy, was proud of his work with helping inmates get college degrees through USC. He told me that those at the prisons were his favorite graduations. Reactionary, and short-sighted, laws essentially ended the program 30 years ago. I’m glad to see funding for these programs is back.
“There are very few bachelor's degree programs offered in prisons because, for the last quarter-century, there has been a ban on people in prison using federal money to pay for college classes. It's a vestige of the "tough on crime" era that was set in stone in the 1994 crime bill.”

Kenny Butler and Daniel Duron worked toward their degrees while in prison. Their journey could become more common with Pell grants becoming available to incarcerated people.
