No one, and we do mean no one, should take this article as a suggestion. Especially all across America. 🇺🇸
PRIVACY DOUBLE STANDARD
Horry County police can see your license plate. But since January, the officers running those cameras can ask the county to hide THEIR home addresses. 🚨
That’s the double standard we dug into this week, and it runs from Washington all the way to Conway:
📸 More than 1,790 license plate readers now operate across South Carolina. Almost every agency in the Grand Strand uses them.
⚠️ This summer, five Greenville County law enforcement employees were fired for misusing the cameras. One officer allegedly tracked a former partner 166 times.
📱 In March, the FBI director confirmed the bureau is buying Americans’ location data from data brokers, with no warrant required.
🔒 Meanwhile, SC lawmakers keep their own correspondence exempt from FOIA. Body cam footage isn’t a public record. And a new state law lets officers and judges scrub their personal info from government websites.
Some of these protections have real reasons behind them. But the people with the most power over us are getting more privacy, and the rest of us are getting less.
Horry County Council’s public safety committee is reviewing the Flock camera program. Now is the time to ask questions: How long is our data kept? Who can search it? Will audits be made public?

Independent. Reader-funded. No county contracts. Just the questions you’d ask if you had the time. [https://myrtlebeachnews.com/the-privacy-double-standard/]
