A big day for our appellate practice. ⚖️

Attorney Katie DiFerdinando recently appeared before the Appellate Court of Maryland for oral argument, advocating for her clients in a complex guardianship appeal involving due process, fiduciary removal, and the importance of following the procedures required by law.

Appellate argument demands preparation, precision, and the ability to answer difficult questions from the bench in real time. Katie did exactly that, firmly advocating for her clients and defending their right to a lawful process.

One partner controls all the money, and the other has to ask for it. That can be a couple's agreement. It can also be financial abuse, and it often keeps people in relationships they would otherwise leave, because leaving means starting with nothing.

Some signs: no access to the online accounts, an "allowance," pressure to quit a job or cut hours, purchases you have to hide, or debt run up on joint cards or in your name for things you did not buy. One of these alone may mean nothing. Several together is a pattern.

Maryland now lets a court in a protective order case order the abuser to repay the costs the abuse caused, including emergency housing, relocation and damaged property. That can make leaving more possible than it was a year ago.

LBO was proud to sponsor Voices for Children’s 2026 A Vintage Affair, the organization’s largest annual fundraiser supporting youth in foster care throughout Howard County.

One of our attorneys, Katie DiFerdinando, and her husband, Joe, attended the event and enjoyed a wonderful evening in support of an important cause. Voices for Children trains Court Appointed Special Advocates to serve as consistent, caring voices for children who have experienced abuse or neglect and to advocate for safe, permanent homes.

We are grateful for the work Voices for Children does for children and families in our community, and honored to support its mission!

Your child turns 18. You may still pay tuition, cover their health insurance and take the late-night calls, but none of that gives you legal authority over their finances, their medical decisions or their college records.

Most families find out at the worst moment: a hospital visit, a frozen bank account, or a problem the college will only discuss with the student.

A few signed documents avoid most of this. A financial power of attorney, an advance medical directive and a FERPA waiver let your student choose who can help.

If you're divorced or were never married, there's one more reason. When no one has been named, the law puts each parent on equal footing. Naming an agent lets your student settle that ahead of time.

Maryland has two kinds of court orders for people who need protection from violence, and which one you can ask for depends on your relationship with the other person.

A protective order covers current and former spouses, people who have lived together for at least 90 days in the past year, relatives by blood, marriage or adoption, parents of a child in common, people who have had a sexual relationship in the past year, and vulnerable adults.

A peace order covers almost everyone else: a neighbor, a coworker, an acquaintance, a stranger, or someone you dated who does not fit the list above.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and as of today Maryland's protective order law works differently in two ways.

A temporary protective order now lasts 14 days from the date it is served, up from seven, and the final hearing must happen within that same 14 days. For someone trying to find a lawyer and gather evidence, that is an extra week to prepare.

Courts can also now order the respondent to repay losses the abuse caused: medical and counseling bills, damaged property, emergency shelter or relocation, transportation, court costs and reasonable attorney's fees. Before, getting that money back meant filing a separate lawsuit.

New school year, new fees. Sports registration, band instruments, a laptop the school expects every eighth grader to have. Then the question: is that covered by child support, or is it extra?

Maryland's child support guidelines set a basic amount from both parents' incomes and the custody schedule. On top of that, the guidelines add specific costs: work-related child care, health insurance for the child, extraordinary medical expenses, and school expenses when a court finds the child has a particular educational need. Private school tuition can be one of those. A travel soccer fee usually is not, unless your agreement says so.

The cleanest fix is a line in the agreement that says how activity and school costs get split, and how one parent tells the other before signing the child up. If your order is silent and the receipts are piling up, that is worth a conversation before it becomes a dispute.
