Resilience. Unity. Visibility. Those are some of the themes across the country for Pride Month 2026 – and they’re certainly values Burnette Shutt & McDaniel supports every day. Though South Carolina Pride events traditionally are held in October, we believe it’s important to stand in solidarity with others in the United States and across the globe as they commemorate historic events, re-commit to the fight for full equality, and celebrate the rich contributions of the the LGBTQ+ community to our country and the world.
Happy Pride Month!

We are excited to welcome two law clerks, Siri and Mary Faith to BSM this summer! We celebrate Siri Cortez for our first profile of our law clerks.

Siri is originally from New York City, but has lived in South Carolina for twelve years and Columbia for nine. Her undergraduate degree is in philosophy with a minor in visual arts. After completing her Bachelor’s degree at the University of South Carolina she moved back to NYC to study art at the Art Students League of New York.

Her strong sense of justice and desire to keep learning led her to pursue a career in the law. Before she applied to law school, Siri had a growing sense that she wanted to pursue an intellectually stimulating career that had potential to effect change. While working at the local bookstore, she met more lawyers in the Columbia community and knew this was where she wanted to start and build her legal career.

Siri is a rising third-year law student at the University of South Carolina School of Law. She has worked as a research assistant to Law Professor Benjamin Means, where she researched issues involving Black and Family-owned agricultural operations. She is also a member of the Environmental Law Society, the Black Law Students Association, the Social Media Coordinator for the Student Animal Defense League, and the Treasurer of the Latino Law Students Association.

Outside of law school and work, Siri’s interests include horses, dogs, painting, and reading. We’re happy to have Siri as a member of our team!

Celebrating 45+ years as an attorney
During his decades-long legal practice, one thing has been a constant for Ashley Pennington: His commitment to, not only protecting clients' rights, but also to helping create systems that give them a chance at a better life. As hard as he works as an attorney, Ashley works just as hard to shut the revolving door that for far too many people leads back to prison again.
He's led task forces focusing on fair treatment in the justice system. He's founded nonprofits that help formerly incarcerated people reintegrate into society. And he continues to fight, through litigation, for fair, humane treatment for those accused of crimes.
It's been quite the career so far. We're thrilled that Ashley is part of the Burnette Shutt & McDaniel team and excited to see what comes next.

Never doubt the power of voters. By noon today, 26,000 of you had already shown up to vote early in the primaries. And that show of voter power contributed to the Senate just now ending debate on the redistricting bill. This means that voting districts as they stand now will not be changed in this election. The Rule of Law prevails!

05/25/2026

Here’s why the current redistricting effort is contrary to the Rule of Law and how you can fight back by voting early tomorrow.
