I have been meaning to post something about the Affordable Care Act and it kept slipping my mind. Here is the deal for folks who have lost their job and are considering COBRA. COBRA will cost you a LOT of money. Losing a job gives you what is known as a SEP or SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD ON THE HEALTH EXCHANGE. You have a limited amount of time after your group insurance lapses to enroll in a subsidized plan on the exchange. The Media was talking about how President Trump decided not to open the exchange back up for people who have lost their job. What the media didn't tell you if that it already is open to those folks. If you have lost your job and made or will make roughly 13k for a single person or roughly 17K for two people and a bit more for a family (depends on how many family members to see how much income you need) by December 31, 2020, you qualify to enroll in a subsidized plan under MOST but NOT ALL circumstances. Because the plan is subsidized the premium you pay will almost certainly be less than COBRA and a better plan to boot in most cases. Unemployment income counts, social security income counts, and self-employment income counts. If this information helps anyone -Great! If you would like to talk to me and see if I can help you please call me at 803-771-6391 or my cell at 803-348-7187. As the lawyer on TV says "it won't cost you anything to see if I can help".
