New spouse vs. adult children is a story we often see after a parent dies. But this one will stop you cold. An 85-year-old widow, arrested in her nightgown, sitting in detention — all over a modest estate her husband left no plan for. Please, please, leave a roadmap for your love ones.

After Marie-Thérèse Ross-Mahé’s husband died, an inheritance battle exploded. Her stepson then used his influence to have her arrested, an Alabama probate judge said.

First — don’t panic. But don’t ignore it either.
In Maryland probate, an interested person (think: an heir, beneficiary, or creditor) can file exceptions if they believe something in your account is wrong. It essentially kicks things up to the Court.

What that means for you as PR:
- You’ll need to defend your accounting and decisions
- Deadlines matter — missing them can hurt your position
- This is usually when having professional guidance becomes critical

Filing exceptions doesn’t automatically mean you did something wrong. But it does mean the process just got more formal. Every estate is different, and the right next step depends on your specific situation.

Follow along — I’ll be sharing more about navigating the tricky parts of Maryland probate.

Being a Maryland PR is a big job — and nobody hands you a manual. Here are some of the most common missteps I see:
❌ Closing accounts too soon — before the claims period is over or the account is filed
❌ Mixing estate funds with personal funds — always keep a separate estate account
❌ Distributing assets before debts are settled — this can come back on you personally
❌ Missing deadlines — the Register of Wills has a timeline, and it doesn’t wait
❌ Not calculating inheritance tax correctly — Maryland has its own inheritance tax rules, and getting it wrong can cause delays or penalties
❌ Leaving the estate open for years — closing an estate isn’t optional, and an account that lingers can create unnecessary complications
❌ Going it alone — assuming you can figure it all out without any guidance

None of these make you a bad person — they make you human. But they can create real legal and financial consequences.

The good news? Most mistakes are avoidable with the right information upfront.

Follow this page so you stay ahead of the process, not behind it.

Here’s what I’ve learned after years of sitting across the table from parents who love their kids fiercely and still haven’t written a will: it’s not laziness. It’s not that they don’t care. It’s that they’ve gotten stuck on one question — who would raise my children if something happened to me? — and because they can’t answer it perfectly, they answer it with nothing.

And I get it. That question is enormous. It asks you to imagine the unimaginable, and then make a decision that feels impossibly high-stakes, and then have a conversation that feels impossibly awkward. So you table it. And then you table it again. And suddenly it’s been four years.

Here’s what I want you to hear: we don’t recommend finding one perfect person — we recommend building a deep bench of people you’d trust, because that’s a much easier place to start. And nothing is permanent. You can always change it — in fact, we offer free amendments to guardian designations for a full year after you sign, specifically to give parents the peace of mind to just get it done without feeling locked in.

The guardian question doesn’t have to be solved before you start. Starting is how you solve it.

If this has been sitting on your to-do list, schedule a quick chat with our team. No pressure, no commitment — just 15 minutes to see if we can help you get unstuck. Link in bio to grab a time.

As a Maryland PR, one of your most important jobs is creating an estate account for the Register of Wills. It’s basically a detailed financial report of everything that came in and went out of the estate.

And yes — it has to be done right.

A few things that trip people up:
🔹 Not understanding the difference between an interim account and a final account
🔹 Miscalculating the inheritance tax or probate fee due
🔹 Accounting for improper expenses

The account is how you show the court (and the beneficiaries) that you did your job properly. It’s your protection as PR.

Feeling overwhelmed? You’re not alone — and you don’t have to figure this out by yourself.

You’re the one they call when something goes wrong. You’re managing your kids’ schedules and your parents’ doctor appointments in the same afternoon. You’re holding everything together for everyone else — and quietly wondering who’s holding it together for you.

And here’s the thing nobody talks about: what happens if you’re the one who can’t make decisions anymore? Who steps in? Who knows what you actually want?

That’s the stuff we think about at Acorn Law. Not in a scary way — in a ‘someone finally has your back’ way.

This space is for the ones carrying everyone else. Come hang with us.

If this is your life right now, hit follow — we’ll be here. 🖤

Not so fast. As a Maryland Personal Representative, there’s actually a specific order in which creditors must be paid — and paying the wrong ones first can make YOU personally liable for the shortfall.

Here’s what most PRs don’t realize:
👉 You can’t pay creditors whenever — there’s a claims period you must wait out.
👉 Not all debts are treated equally. Maryland law prioritizes them.
👉 Paying a friend or family member back before following proper order? That could be a problem.
The creditor process is one of the most overlooked — and risky — parts of probate.

If you’re following the Artemis mission, then you might know that Captain Reid Wiseman is from Baltimore County! We were so moved to see this coverage from Amy Kaufeldt about the planning he did before blasting off:

- Astronaut Reid Wiseman lost his wife to cancer in 2020. Yesterday he blasted off on an historic mission around the moon. The 50-year-old said he had to have a heartbreaking discussion with his two teenage daughters about the plan for them in the event of his own death.

Wiseman has raised daughters Ellie and Katherine as a single dad after the death of his wife Carroll. He was prepared to quit his job as an astronaut when she was was diagnosed, but Carroll refused to let him give up his dream job.

Wiseman said he wanted to mentally prepare his girls on the possibility he might not return from the 10-day Artemis II mission.

Wiseman told them: “Here’s where the will is, here’s where the trust documents are, and if anything happens to me, here’s what’s going to happen to you.”

He said, “I actually wish more people in everyday life talked to their families in that way because you never know what the next day is going to bring.”
