Why May is one of the most important months for custody planning
As the school year comes to an end, May often becomes a major transition period for co-parents. Summer schedules can quickly become complicated when vacations, camps, holidays, work schedules, and travel plans all start overlapping.
Planning early can help reduce stress, avoid misunderstandings, and create smoother transitions for children.
Here are a few things many parents begin discussing during this time:
• Summer vacation schedules
• Travel plans and out-of-state trips
• Summer camps and extracurricular activities
• Holiday and long weekend arrangements
• Childcare changes while school is out
• Transportation and pick-up/drop-off adjustments
• Changes in work schedules or availability
• Communication expectations during summer visits
• Make-up parenting time, if needed
• Updating parenting plans to reflect current routines
Even when parents generally get along, unclear expectations during summer months can easily lead to confusion or conflict later on.
Having conversations early — and putting agreements in writing when appropriate — can help everyone stay on the same page and keep the focus on what’s best for the children.
