It's been awhile since I've found anything worth sharing - I've become increasingly selective about suggesting your reading time and attention for informational resources. This article is relevant and timely, and so packed with pertinent information that I will just let anyone who wishes to, read it for themselves.

Not every life passion is a mental disorder

Thank you to everyone who has viewed this page - it is designed to be informational, not to drum up business. Currently, my time in court keeps me a bit too busy to make many posts here. I will say, however, that 2016 is turning out to be as interesting in terms of developments in community response mechanisms to community problems, as anything I might have thought or anticipated on my own. I will share information as it becomes available.

Hi everyone! It's hard to believe another year has nearly gone, and as I look forward to 2016, I plan to continue to occasionally make posts here that seem to be of the highest value to the community I try to serve. Just as a reminder, my practice keeps me in court much of the time, so my office hours are irregular and by appointment only, at 719-634-8699. This page is not monitored for potential client contacts and I don't have a website. I wish you all a happy and healthy new year.

This article makes me think about whether the same old way we've been doing things is the way we SHOULD be doing things:

"The debate over the efficacy of 12-step programs has been quietly bubbling for decades among addiction specialists. But it has taken on new urgency with the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which requires all insurers and state Medicaid programs to pay for alcohol- and substance-abuse treatment, extending coverage to 32 million Americans who did not previously have it and providing a higher level of coverage for an additional 30 million.

Nowhere in the field of medicine is treatment less grounded in modern science. "

Its faith-based 12-step program dominates treatment in the United States. But researchers have debunked central tenets of AA doctrine and found dozens of other treatments more effective.

An interesting article on the "shaming" approach to addiction counseling:

"The idea of self-direction violates the 12-step belief system. Consider, for instance, AA’s deprecation of “self-will run riot” (Google that phrase). There is simply no way to ignore this contradiction between an empowerment approach and the 12 steps, as Ilse Thompson and I make clear in Recover!"

Addiction therapy focuses people on their deficiencies and addict identities

Happy New Year everyone! In the past year, I have endeavored to responsibly bring you information about treatment approaches to addiction. In 2015, I will hopefully be able to expand upon those topics and offer other resources that are of value to individuals and their families and also increase the public good.

As this article highlights, it's important to understand that the science and practice of substance abuse treatment is constantly evolving.

A growing wing of addiction treatment rejects the Alcoholics Anonymous model of strict abstinence as the sole form of recovery for alcohol and drug users.
