What happens if the driver who causes an accident doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your injuries?

That’s where uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, often called UM/UIM coverage, can become important.

Uninsured motorist coverage can apply when the person who caused the accident doesn’t have insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage can apply when they have insurance, but their coverage isn’t enough to cover the injuries and damages they caused.

This coverage is there to protect you and your family, not the other driver.

At Anderson Injury Law, we believe UM/UIM coverage is an important part of an auto insurance policy.

Take a look at your policy. Do you know how much UM/UIM coverage you have?

Medical bills can start arriving long before an accident claim is resolved.

That’s one reason MedPay can be an important part of your auto insurance coverage.

MedPay can help pay medical expenses after an accident for you, members of your family and other people riding in your vehicle, up to the limits of your coverage. It applies regardless of who caused the accident.

MedPay isn’t required in Colorado, but insurance companies are required to offer it, and you can choose whether to keep or waive the coverage.

At Anderson Injury Law, we believe MedPay is an important coverage to consider when reviewing your auto insurance.

Take a look at your policy. Do you know if you have MedPay and how much coverage you have?

Are you covered beyond what’s required?

Colorado requires drivers to carry liability insurance. That coverage protects you when you cause an accident and someone else is injured or their property is damaged.

But that’s not the only coverage you should be looking at.

MedPay can help pay medical bills for you, your family and the people in your vehicle after an accident. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage can protect you when the person who causes the accident either doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.

At Anderson Injury Law, we believe those are two important coverages to consider when reviewing your auto insurance.

Don’t just look at whether you have the coverage Colorado requires.

Look at the coverage that protects you and your family, too.

Do you know what your auto insurance actually covers?

Most of us know we need car insurance. But having insurance and having the coverage you may need after an accident can be two very different things.

In this week's video, we talk about some of the basic auto insurance coverages in Colorado, including what is required and two coverages I believe are especially important: MedPay and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Knowing what's on your policy before an accident happens can make a big difference afterward.

Take a few minutes to look at your own policy. Do you know what coverage you have?

Watch the video to learn what I recommend looking for.

The insurance adjuster may be friendly. The questions may sound reasonable. You may even be offered a quick way to settle your claim.

That doesn't mean you should make decisions before you understand what they could mean for your case.

During this month’s Ask Anderson, we talked about what people should know when dealing with an insurance adjuster after an accident.

Insurance adjusters deal with claims every day. Most people who have been injured in an accident don't. Something as simple as accepting an early settlement, giving a recorded statement or answering questions about your injuries can have consequences later.

That doesn't mean the adjuster is a bad person or that you should refuse to talk to the insurance company. Depending on the circumstances, there may be information you are required to provide.

The important thing is understanding your rights and obligations before making decisions about your claim.

An accident happens in a moment. What comes next can involve a lot of decisions.

What should you document? How should you handle the damage to your vehicle? What does your insurance cover? And how do you know whether you're making the right decisions along the way?

You don't have to know how the entire process works. But understanding your options and asking questions before making decisions can help.

We've spent this week talking about some of the practical issues that come up after an accident.

Next week, we're going to look at another side of that conversation: some of the biggest mistakes people make after an accident — and what you should know before you're faced with those decisions.
