In cases where the police have a warrant, they are permitted to search and detain whatever they find as "unlawful".

If they do not have a warrant, they can be permitted to search common areas if they are given permission by either yourself, roommate, spouse, etc.

When it comes to searches of your place of work, the police have to come with a search warrant, OR have consent from your employer.
