5 years ago I was working on my last 5 For Yell campaign. It was my senior year at A&M, and I was trying to get 5 friends of mine elected as Yell Leaders.
A wise candidate, Shaquille Gould, wrote something that has resonated with me for years. Every time I go vote, whether it be at a local or national level, I remember the words that he wrote:
“Howdy, voting begins today and I hope you all go vote, but first I want to address a few things. Running for an elected position is not about winning. It's about the love that you have for Texas A&M and the call to serve in whatever way you are needed. It's about the servant heart and emotional intelligence that you have for your fellow Ags. It’s about giving back to a school that has given us all so much. It’s about sacrificing your time, effort, voice, and your mind to serve the needs of others. Matthew 20:16 reads "So the last will be first and the first will be last". It's about being an ambassador for A&M and upholding its core values: Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Loyalty, Respect, and Selfless Service. It's about accepting others for who they are no matter what they identify as, whether it be Race, Religion, Ethnicity, Gender, or any other factor. It's about the willingness to stand up and go to battle as a representative of the student body. It's about those children who look up to students as examples, and say "I respect that Ag, want to be an Aggie like him/her when I grow up". Please keep this in mind when voting today or tomorrow. Exercise your right to vote to ensure that we get the best A&M has to offer in the positions to lead our school. Thanks and Gig Em.”
Although his statement was made in reference to yell leader and student body president elections, it still rings true. We need leaders in our community that uphold our values, respect everyone for who they are, serve others for the desire to do good and not for prestige, and set a great example for future generations.
If you haven’t voted already, early voting is this week. In Brazos County, you can vote at the following locations.
