A useful tax-inbox rule is to sort messages into three buckets.

ACT on legitimate notices, deadlines and verified requests from your tax professional.

SAVE closing statements, invoices, loan documents, payroll reports, K-1s, 1099s, mileage records and documents supporting deductions or basis.

QUESTION unexpected links, urgent payment demands, unfamiliar portals and requests for sensitive information.

Urgency is often used to stop people from thinking. If a message seems questionable, slow down and verify the sender using a contact method you already trust.

October 15 is almost here.

For many taxpayers who timely filed extensions, this is the federal filing deadline for individual Form 1040 returns. Many calendar-year C corporations on extension also have an October 15 filing deadline.

Remember: the extension gave more time to file, not more time to pay.

Before the return goes out, make sure extension payments, estimated payments and any remaining open items have been reconciled. A clean finish now can prevent a lot of unnecessary correspondence later.

Estate planning is not only about a will or trust.

For business owners and real estate investors, the estate plan should line up with entity ownership, operating agreements, beneficiary designations, debt, buy-sell arrangements and the plan for who can make decisions if you cannot.

A tax plan can be perfectly reasonable on paper and still fail operationally if the ownership and succession documents point in another direction.

Good planning is coordinated planning. Your tax, business and estate documents should tell the same story.

Tax planning should happen while you still have time to act.

Now is a good time to review year-to-date income, payroll and owner compensation, estimated taxes, equipment purchases, property activity, retirement opportunities and documentation.

The goal is not to spend money just to create a deduction. The goal is to understand where the year is heading and decide what actually makes sense before your options disappear.

If we need to review your 2026 tax position before year-end, getting it scheduled early gives us more choices and more time to implement the decisions properly.

The September 15 business filing deadline is behind us. The next major tax deadline is October 15.

For taxpayers who extended their individual returns, this is the time to make sure the remaining pieces are actually moving toward completion.

That means confirming:

• All tax documents have been submitted
• Estimated and extension payments are accounted for
• Any K-1s or other late documents have been received
• Open questions have been answered
• There are no surprises sitting unresolved until the final week

An extension gives additional time to file. It does not make October 15 any less of a deadline.

If your return is still outstanding, now is the time to get the remaining pieces together.

The September 15 estimated-tax deadline is coming up.

Do not assume a payment amount calculated months ago is still right if your year has changed.

Business income, a property sale, a change in withholding, a new business or rental, K-1 income, a major equipment purchase or another large deduction can all change the projection.

Paying too little can create a painful balance and possible penalties. Paying too much can unnecessarily take cash away from the business or your investments.

The payment voucher is not the tax plan. If the facts changed, the projection should change too.

September 15 is almost here.

For calendar-year businesses that timely extended, this is generally the federal filing deadline for partnership Form 1065 and S corporation Form 1120-S returns.

It is also the third-quarter estimated-tax payment deadline for many individuals.

Remember: an extension gave additional time to file the return. It generally did not give additional time to pay the tax.

If you still have missing information, unresolved payments or an outdated estimate, now is the time to get clear on what remains open.

Your tax return is important — but it is still historical.

It does not tell you whether you can safely hire, purchase equipment, take an owner distribution or cover the next tax payment. It also does not tell you what happens if sales are 15% higher than expected — or 15% lower.

Those questions require a current forecast built from year-to-date results and realistic expectations for the rest of the year.

The return tells you where you have been. The forecast helps you decide where to go next.

If you are making meaningful business or investment decisions based only on last year’s return, you are driving while looking mostly in the rear-view mirror.

Strong revenue does not automatically mean you should feel flush with cash.

A business can report a healthy profit while cash is tied up in receivables, inventory or WIP, equipment, loan principal, owner distributions and tax payments. That is why a good-looking P&L and a tight bank balance can both be accurate at the same time.

If the business feels busy but cash still feels tight, do not immediately assume profitability is the problem. The issue may be timing, collections, debt service, owner withdrawals or simply not setting aside taxes as the money comes in.

A rolling cash forecast and a separate tax reserve account are two of the most practical tools I recommend. They turn “Where did the money go?” into a question you can answer before it becomes a problem.
