Career Plan:
☑ Quit Job
☑ Avoid Support
☐ Explain It To The Judge
We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is generally not a winning strategy.
One of the most common misconceptions we hear is that quitting a job automatically eliminates child support or alimony obligations.
Not necessarily.
When determining support, courts can consider far more than what you’re currently earning. They may look at your education, work history, earning capacity, prior income, and whether a reduction in income was voluntary.
In other words, intentionally reducing your income doesn’t always produce the result people think it will.
Before making a major employment change during a divorce, child support, alimony, or modification case, talk to your attorney first.
A career change may be a great decision.
A career change made solely to avoid support obligations? Not so much.
