Those who know me, know how important Justice is to me. So today, as we celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I have decided to share a quote from a speech he delivered on August 16, 1967 titled "Where Do We Go From Here?" at the 11th Convention of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA. Dr. King said:
“Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”
There is so much contained in this paragraph, but Dr. King is surely speaking a word. What Dr. King could see and so eloquently pointed out, is that without the love, none of the other stuff matters. If you cannot find the place where you have compassion or humanity, then there is nothing that you can offer to the community. It's not either or...it's BOTH! You need BOTH. And when you reach a place where you can no longer find the love, then it's time for you to pack it in.
So today, I honor Dr. King by heeding his words and knowing that love allows for all things to work. And as I continue to be a justice fighter, I am humbled that his words are still relevant today. I thank you Dr. King for your contribution to this world! May you continue to rest in peace as your words and deeds live on.
