The Federal Debt Collection Practices Act was passed in 1977 to protect consumers from debt collectors’ false, deceptive or misleading, unconscionable and other unlawful collection practices. I am pleased to inform you that Gregory S. Reichenbach (lead counsel) and I obtained a $51,000.00 jury verdict for a consumer in the United States District Court in Columbus, Ohio. The attorney debt collector attempted to collect a debt by sending our client a letter that he may foreclose on her property (where she and her husband have lived for almost 40 years) unless a small debt was paid. However, the debt was for our client’s daughter (who had the same name but different middle initial). Also, the attorney did not have the authority to collect the debt and did not intend to actually foreclose at all. Here is a copy of the jury verdict forms which provide more detail.
