Meet the Team: Lynn Gullett ⚖️

We'd like you to meet Lynn Gullett; and if you're facing a criminal, DWI, traffic, or family law matter, she's someone you want in your corner.

Lynn represents clients in criminal defense, DWI, and traffic cases, as well as domestic violence, custody, and family law matters. People often come to her during some of the most stressful moments of their lives, and her approach is simple: help you understand exactly what you're facing, what to expect, and what your options are, every step of the way.

Few attorneys bring the perspective Lynn does. She earned her undergraduate degree from Catawba College and her law degree from Campbell University, and she's been licensed in North Carolina since 1988. Lynn is a retired Superior Court judge whose career includes more than sixteen years as an Assistant District Attorney and eight years as a District Court judge, and she's also a certified Superior Court mediator through the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission. In other words, Lynn has seen these cases from the prosecution table and from the bench, and she puts that experience to work for you.

Outside the office, Lynn has a heart for animals. She and her husband volunteer with Piedmont Animal Rescue and have fostered more than 100 dogs over the years. 🐾

Sarah earned her undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and her law degree from Wake Forest University. "I'll do it later."

It's the most common estate planning mistake we see. Not a bad decision... just no decision at all.

Here's the hard truth: none of us know when "later" runs out. And the people who pay the price for an unfinished estate plan aren't the ones who put it off; it's the family they leave behind.

Assault charges in North Carolina; there's more than one kind, and the differences matter.

"Assault" covers a wider range of conduct than most people realize under NC law. Here's a basic breakdown:

👊 Simple assault: the most basic form; no physical contact is even required in some cases. A Class 2 misdemeanor.
⚠️ Assault and battery: when physical contact actually occurs
🏥 Assault inflicting serious injury: when the victim suffers significant physical harm. Elevated to a Class A1 misdemeanor or felony depending on circumstances.
🔫 Assault with a deadly weapon: serious felony territory, especially if serious injury or intent to kill is involved
👮 Assault on a government official or law enforcement: enhanced charges and penalties
👶 Assault on a child or female: specific classifications under NC law with their own penalties

The facts of what happened, and what can be proven, matter enormously in assault cases.

What is a deed... and why does it matter which type you get?

A deed is the legal document that transfers ownership of real property from one person to another. But not all deeds offer the same level of protection, and knowing the difference can save you from a serious headache.

Here are the most common types in NC:

🛡️ General Warranty Deed: the gold standard. The seller warrants that the title is clear all the way back through the entire chain of ownership. This is what buyers should expect in a standard home purchase.

📋 Special Warranty Deed: the seller only warrants against title defects that arose during their ownership, not before. Common in commercial transactions and foreclosure sales.

⚠️ Quitclaim Deed: transfers whatever interest the grantor has, but with zero warranties. No promises about title at all. Used between family members or in divorce situations, not in arm's length sales.

🏛️ Trustee's Deed: used when property is transferred out of a trust.

If you're buying a home and the seller is offering anything less than a general warranty deed, that's a conversation worth having before closing.

Your business partner is great. You still need a buy-sell agreement.

A buy-sell agreement is essentially a prenup for your business partnership. It governs what happens to a partner's ownership interest when a triggering event occurs; and you want this documented long before you ever need it.

Triggering events typically include:
💀 Death of a partner
🏥 Disability or incapacity
🚪 A partner wanting to leave the business
⚖️ Divorce of a partner (do you want your partner's ex as a co-owner?)
💸 Bankruptcy or financial trouble
🤝 A partner being bought out

The agreement sets the terms: who can buy, at what price, and how it's funded, often through life insurance on the partners.

Without one, you could end up in business with someone's surviving spouse, estranged family member, or a court-appointed trustee.

If you have a business partner and no buy-sell agreement, this is the conversation to have.
