We’re proud to share that our own Patrick Quarles was recognized last night by the Community Law Program at their Volunteer Appreciation Event, held at the new Second District Court of Appeal building.

Community Law Program connects people in Pinellas County with legal help they might not otherwise be able to get. Patrick has been glad to volunteer his time with them, and he says the work keeps him connected to the community we serve every day. It’s a reminder that behind every case is a neighbor who needs someone in their corner.

The evening ended with live improv from Spitfire Comedy, which Patrick especially enjoyed. Congratulations, Patrick, and thank you to Community Law Program for all you do for our community.

Medicare open enrollment starts today and runs through December 7. It's a good time to review your coverage, and a good time to clear up one of the most common misunderstandings we hear.

Medicare generally does not pay for long-term nursing home care. It may cover a short stay after a hospitalization, but the ongoing, day-to-day care many people eventually need usually isn't covered. That's where families get caught off guard, and where costs can add up quickly.

For many Florida families, Medicaid ends up being the program that helps pay for long-term care. Qualifying involves income and asset rules, though, and the planning works best when it happens before care is needed, not in the middle of a crisis.

In Florida, your home isn't just your biggest asset. It also comes with its own set of rules.

Florida's homestead protections are some of the strongest in the country. They do a lot of good: they help protect your home from many creditors and can lower your property taxes. What people don't always realize is that those same protections can limit who you're allowed to leave your home to. If you're married or have a minor child, you may not be able to leave your home to whoever you'd like, even if your will says otherwise.

This matters a lot for blended families, second marriages, and anyone who wants the house to go to someone specific. There are ways to plan around it, but they have to be set up correctly and ahead of time.

Here's one that surprises a lot of people: your will doesn't control everything.

Life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and many bank accounts pass directly to whoever is named on the beneficiary form. It doesn't matter what your will says. If you filled out that form fifteen years ago and never looked at it again, that old form is what counts.

We see this come up in painful ways. An ex-spouse is still listed. A child who has since passed away is still named. Or a beneficiary is a minor who can't legally receive the money directly.

The fix is usually simple. Pull up your accounts, check who's listed, and make sure it matches the plan you actually want. If you're not sure how those forms fit with your will or trust, that's exactly the kind of thing we help with.

Welcome back, snowbirds. The traffic on US-19 tells us you've arrived.

If you split your time between Florida and another state, here's something worth knowing: estate planning documents written up north don't always work smoothly down here. Florida has its own rules about who can serve as your personal representative. For example, someone who doesn't live in Florida generally has to be a relative to serve. Banks and medical providers here also tend to be more comfortable with documents that follow Florida's format.

None of this means your documents are wrong. They were just built for a different state. If Florida is becoming more of your home, or you're thinking about making it your official residence, it's worth having your plan looked at by someone who works with Florida law every day.

There are about 90 days left in 2026. If you're like most people, there's a short list of things you told yourself you'd handle "this year," and one of them is probably your will.

Maybe you had a baby, bought a house, got married, or lost a parent, and you thought, "We really need to update everything." Then life happened. That's normal. It's also why the fourth quarter is a good time to finally cross it off.

A lot of planning is simpler than people expect. Usually it's a conversation about your family, a few decisions about who you trust, and a couple of signatures. And the peace of mind going into the holidays is real, especially if you'll be traveling or gathering with family and want those conversations to be easy.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and nearly all of us know someone whose life has been touched by it. A mother, a sister, a friend, a coworker. Sometimes it's us.

So first, the most important thing: if you're due for a screening, please schedule it. If someone you love keeps putting theirs off, give them a gentle nudge. And remember that men can get breast cancer too, so the guys in your life should know the signs as well.

Here's the part we see from our side of the desk. When someone gets a diagnosis, life shifts quickly. There are appointments, treatments, and a lot of decisions made in a short amount of time. Families tell us the hardest moments were often simple things: a spouse who couldn't get information from the doctor's office, or bills piling up while someone was too sick to manage them.

A health care surrogate designation, a HIPAA authorization, and a durable power of attorney can make a real difference. They let the people you trust step in, talk to your medical team, and handle the practical details so you can focus on getting well. These documents aren't about expecting the worst. They're about making sure you're supported no matter what comes.
