Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US. The city was founded in 1887 and became the first incorporated city in what is now Pinellas County. The city's signature sponge industry was built by Greek immigrants, turning a remote village into what was called "the sponge capital of the world." Visitors can explore the historic sites, including the Tarpon Springs Greektown Historic District and Tarpon Springs Historic District, which have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
