If you obtained conditional permanent resident status (green card) through marriage, it's crucial to file your Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence within 90 days prior to the expiration date. This step ensures continuity in your status and avoids potential complications. Recently, we assisted clients who mistakenly filed applications for a replacement permanent resident card before removing the conditions on their permanent resident status. Unfortunately, this led to years of waiting and eventual denials from USCIS. Attempting to navigate immigration processes alone can result in critical mistakes, wasted application fees, significant delays in processing time, or even deportation proceedings.

Our office understands the complexities of immigration law and offers expert guidance to ensure a smooth and successful immigration journey. Reach out to us today for assistance.

The US government has extended and redesignated Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) until December 2025. Additionally, F-1 students from Ethiopia can now request employment authorization and work an increased number of hours while school is in session, all while maintaining F1 status through the TPS designation period. Current TPS beneficiaries also benefit from the automatic extension of work permits through June 2025.

In the last few days, USCIS issued Notices of Prima Facie Case (NPFC) for two of our clients who faced challenges related to domestic violence, false accusations, and coercion under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

VAWA empowers abused spouses, children, and parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (green card holders) to independently petition without the abuser's knowledge or consent. Despite the name of the law, VAWA protections apply regardless of s*x, s*xual orientation, or gender identity.

Prima Facie determination signifies USCIS acknowledgment that a VAWA self-petition has been thoroughly reviewed, properly filed, and meets all eligibility requirements. Although immediate approval is not guaranteed with a favorable NPFC, it signifies a positive step forward for petitioners, who will be designated as qualified aliens, thereby securing specific legal benefits and access to essential resources.
