More Than a Signature

To most folks, notarization might look like this:
👀 “Sign here.”
🔏 Stamp.
👏 “All done.”

But behind that brief moment is a legal framework designed to protect intention, identity, and integrity. There’s more than one type of notarization and each serves a unique purpose.

✍️ Acknowledgments
This is when someone signs a document willingly, not necessarily in the notary's presence but they appear before the notary to declare they did, and that it was done freely.

> Think: deeds, property transfers, or other documents tied to ownership and responsibility.

📜 Jurats
In this type, the signer must be in front of the notary, and they must sign in the notary's presence. But, there’s more. They also swear that the contents of the document are true, under penalty of perjury.

> Think: affidavits, written statements, or testimony-like documents.

🙋‍♂️ Oaths and Affirmations
Sometimes it’s not about signing; it’s about speaking truth under oath. A notary can administer verbal oaths for testimony or affirmations for those who object to swearing.

> “Do you solemnly swear…” or “Do you affirm, under penalty of perjury…”

---

Many people don’t realize that documents like powers of attorney and living wills often require notarization not just to be legally valid, but to hold up under scrutiny if ever contested.

It’s not about the stamp and signature.
It’s about clarity, capacity, and consent.

What does a notary actually do?

A notary public isn’t just someone with a stamp. The person is a commissioned public officer appointed by the state government to act as an impartial witness in matters of document ex*****on and sworn statements.

We don’t verify paperwork, we verify people. And, every stamp is logged in a secure notary journal to ensure transparency, traceability, and accountability.

Whether it’s a power of attorney, a will, a title transfer, or an affidavit, the notary’s job is to confirm identity, assess willingness, and protect against fraud or coercion all under oath.

A notary’s job is about integrity. It’s about standing in the gap between trust and transaction, between intention and record.
