📝 DIY Forms Gone Wrong

A Michigan man downloaded free probate forms online. He filled them out wrong, used old versions, and filed in the wrong court.

Result: The case sat for 6 months with no progress. The court finally rejected it, and fees racked up in the meantime.

➡️ Lesson: Probate paperwork is technical. Using outdated or incorrect forms can stall — or completely derail — your case.

📉 The Bank Account That Disappeared

A daughter handling probate on her own found a bank account but didn’t know how to “claim” it properly. She brought the death certificate to the bank, who froze the funds and told her she needed letters of authority.

Result: She had to start a formal probate case after months of waiting — and the money was tied up the whole time.

➡️ Lesson: Without the right legal authority, you can’t touch anything — not even if you’re the next of kin.

A man serving as personal representative didn’t send the legally required notice to creditors. He didn’t even know he was supposed to.

Result: The probate case was dismissed. He had to refile everything and ended up hiring a lawyer anyway — but now with late penalties.

➡️ Lesson: There are strict deadlines and notice rules in Michigan probate. Miss one, and you’re back to square one.
