**“I need fingerprinting.” “I need a background check.” Are they the same thing?**

We answer this question daily at THE GO TO NOTARY LLC. Someone recently asked our website chatbot, too—so let’s clear up the confusion.

**Fingerprinting collects your prints. A fingerprint-based background check uses those prints to search criminal history records.** They are connected steps.

If you leave an appointment with ink fingerprint cards, those cards are not your background check results. They still need to be submitted through the required application process.

For Ohio BCI/FBI WebCheck, your fingerprints and identifying information are submitted electronically for government processing.

Before scheduling, ask your employer, school, or licensing organization: **“Do I need BCI, FBI, both, or fingerprint cards—and where should the results go?”**

Bring the written instructions with you.

**OHIO NOTARIES: DON’T LET YOUR COMMISSION EXPIRE WHILE WAITING FOR YOUR BACKGROUND CHECK.**

When can you renew? **Ohio law allows you to submit your renewal application beginning THREE MONTHS before your commission expires.** Mark that date on your calendar and prepare early. — Ohio Revised Code §147.031(C).

**THERE IS NO GRACE PERIOD for submitting a renewal after expiration.** If your commission expires before you submit your renewal application, Ohio law prohibits renewing that expired commission. You must apply for a **new notary commission**. Scheduling your fingerprinting appointment alone does not protect your renewal deadline. — Ohio Revised Code §147.031(D).

For applicants required to obtain a background check, the Ohio Secretary of State requires a **BCI report issued within six months of the application or renewal date**, using reason code **147.022**. Ohio attorneys and qualifying Ohio peace officers have exceptions.

**Don’t wait until the final week.** Allow time to receive your report, complete the required renewal education, and submit your application before expiration. Renewal education for non-attorney notaries is one hour, with no renewal exam.
