Can you imagine how many layers of paint are present inside your home?

This is a great pic from my friend Steve Jordan showing how many layers of paint we often deal with in old houses.
The colors on this 100 year old bathroom window were pretty bold and there are just so many coats of paint!
So much of the molding detail gets lost as more and more paint builds up. Eventually after you get too many coats of paint on (the number varies depending on the thickness of each coat) it will eventually start peeling right off. The wood can only hold so many coats before it actually sheds them itself.

This is some very good info about why old construction is SUPERIOR to new.

It’s time to bring this one back out and dust it off because it’s just too good to not share again. It’s been a couple years since I took this pick, but I think it shows you exactly why I restore rather than replace.
Old-growth wood is not even in the same category as the wood that is available today!
84 rings to 6 rings. Both of these are southern yellow pine so it’s not a species difference. It a difference of what we’re ok putting into our houses today vs what we used to be ok with.
Yes, finding this quality lumber today is almost impossible so since that is the case why on earth are there people tearing these houses down and building new in their place?!?
Demo is a choice, not a solution!
