Medical Negligence Case: Preventable Tragedy Due to Medication Error
A local nurse underwent a preventative o***y removal surgery due to a family history of ovarian cancer. While the procedure itself was successful, a critical medical error occurred during her post-operative care.
Despite a clear notation in her medical file indicating an allergy to morphine, hospital staff administered morphine for pain management. Worse, they failed to use a pulse oximeter to monitor her oxygen levels. As a result, the morphine suppressed her breathing, leading to a devastating outcome.
By the time hospital personnel discovered her condition, she had suffered severe brain damage and fell into a persistent coma. She remained in a vegetative state for seven years before passing away.
The legal case resulted in a settlement that provided for her medical care, her daughters' college education, and financial support for her husband, who lost his wife due to a preventable error.
