Rent-To-Own vs. Traditional Financing — What’s the Real Difference? 🏡

If you’ve been house hunting on Zillow or the MLS, you’re probably looking at traditional purchases.

In a traditional deal:

We were recently contacted by someone who was scammed while trying to rent a property that we actually own. After looking into it, we discovered that at different times, someone has been impersonating an owner or agent and attempting to scam people using our property information.

Unfortunately, this happens more often than people realize. Here’s how you can protect yourself and avoid falling victim to an online housing scam:

✅ Don’t rely on Facebook alone.�Always check whether the same listing appears on reputable sites like Zillow or other well-known real estate platforms.

✅ There should always be a phone number.�Call or text the number listed and verify all the details. Be cautious if communication is only through Messenger or email.

🚩 Never pay to see a house.�Scammers often claim they are “agents” (not the owner) and ask for an application fee, deposit, or holding fee before showing the property. This is a SCAM. Legitimate owners or agents do not charge just to view a home.

✅ Ask for photos and details upfront.�A real owner or authorized agent should be able to provide current photos and answer basic questions about the property.
