We focus our practice on family law. Together, our mission is to serve our clients with compassion and understanding while delivering optimal results. Lena and I believe in giving back to our community. I have successfully handled numerous pro bono matters throughout my career and will continue to do so as a member of Winters Family Law LLP. Before forming Winters Family Law LLP with Lena, I spoke at conferences and published extensively on legal topics relating to litigation, with a particular emphasis on technology issues. I am an Adjunct Professor at my alma mater, Northwestern University School of Law, where I teach Introduction to Trial Advocacy.

A few weeks ago, I did a presentation with Alex Volkov at XHomes Realty to a lovely group of real estate and mortgage brokers. An hour presentation turned into a two-hour lively Q&A on the interrelationship between divorce and real estate. How do you preserve a home sale when the parties are getting divorced? If you have questions, call us!

We are still accepting applications to the Mini Law School summer program for high school students. Here is another parent review: "Thank you very much to you and David for organizing such a wonderful session - it was extremely impactful and broadened the insights on how our legal system works and giving kids a very diverse sneak peek into various areas of law. J. enjoyed it very much and learned quite a bit. Now we just have to wait and see if he chooses law as his future career." M.K. (Parent)."

Deadline for applying to Mini Law School summer program is coming up--April 27. Here is another review from a parent of a student from last year: " An email is not enough to thank you for this wonderful week of mini law school. I'm so impressed with how much A. learned in just one week. I can't imagine what an undertaking it was to coordinate so many amazing experiences. When I first talked with A. about it, he was apprehensive to sign up as he didn't have a passion per se for law. Well, you captivated him and he enjoyed each day. It was so fun to hear about his day. He enjoyed telling us all about the various activities you did. I am a school psychologist, so he found it fun to meet an educational attorney and to learn about guardian ad litems and asked me if I've ever worked with one. You really opened his eyes to what lawyers do and to so many career avenues. A. didn't know anyone but he said he had such a good time getting to know the other students and collaborating with them. He was sad the camp came to an end. He enjoyed the friendly competition and the teamwork atmosphere.I appreciate the emails and details of your day. A. was so impressed with the various undergraduate majors that go into law. Thank you for sharing that with the students. All too often kids think they need to know for certain what they want to do and once they decide there's no changing that. You taught these students so many skills in just one week that they will take with them for years to come. I stumbled upon this camp on a GBN facebook group. I would love for my younger son and daughter to do it in the future should you host it again. Please reach out if you continue this camp. It was such a success for A. Thanks again! Enjoy your weekend!" Z.N.

Another review from last year's Mini-Law School: "I wanted to take a moment to thank you for organizing such a wonderful mini law camp for high school students. The amount of planning, coordination, and dedication that went into making it such a success is truly inspiring. Your efforts brought together so many passionate professionals willing to share their experiences and demonstrate what it truly means to be a lawyer. This kind of exposure and mentorship is an invaluable gift to young people exploring their future careers. You gave these students more than just a camp—you gave them an experience that could shape their futures. F. came home excited each day, eager to share what she learned and experienced. She is already looking forward to next year’s camp with great anticipation. Thank you again for your outstanding contribution, to the profession and for inspiring the next generation." Z.V. (parent)

Here is a review from a student of our 2025 summer Mini-Law School: I had the privilege of participating last summer in the High School Mini Law School program that you and your husband led back in August. I wanted to sincerely thank you again for such an impactful experience introducing me to the world of law in so many different aspects. I especially loved going to the Circuit Court in Waukegan and observing the trial there, as well as touring the Northwestern law school campus. That summer experience played a major role in affirming my decision to pursue political science in college, and I can’t express how grateful I am to you and your husband for opening up your profession to inspire the next generation of lawyers. E.F.

Our application for the summer 2026 Mini Law School for high school students is now live. Feel free to forward to a high school student in your life you think might be interested.

Here is what one student said about the program last year: "Thank you for organizing such a fantastic camp! The experiences from this past week, including participating in my first mock trial, have truly deepened my passion for the law and given me a clearer sense of what field of law I want to pursue. The week was so well organized, and with the lack of similar opportunities in the area, I am so glad that you volunteered a week of your time and countless more hours of planning to make this happen. You both have great personalities that made the week a perfect mix of learning with fun (and the trivia was great, though I may be a little biased.) It was a tough decision to decide if I would be able to participate in the camp, as it would require ending my law internship downtown a week early. However, I am very confident that I made the right choice and can't imagine it any other way! The content of the camp taught me more than any day in a job could. This morning took some time to get adjusted to without a legal panel to question or those Marriott cookies; however, I am already looking forward to next year and the day when I present a case for a judge, no longer in a mock trial context! Thank you, J.K.

It's a wrap!

Today we concluded our first Winters Family Mini-Law School with mock trials. Our students conducted full “custody” trials at the Daley Center Courthouse. Special thanks to Cook County Circuit Court Judge Perla Tirado and Cook County Domestic Relations Division Presiding Judge Regina Scannicchio, who hosted and judged two trials. The students conducted opening statements, direct and cross examinations, and closing arguments in front of real Cook County judges. Better yet, the students got to participate in a Q & A with the judges after the trial.

We hope our students enjoyed the experience, because we absolutely loved it. The best part was getting to know the wonderful, talented, and hard-working students who attended our program. We were genuinely impressed with the students’ energy, seriousness, and work ethic. We are excited to see what they do next. We sincerely believe that if the next generation of lawyers is anything like the students with whom we worked, the law profession will be in excellent hands going forward.
