Based on recent guidance from the ICE Acting Director, to avoid expedite removal from the US, one should carry proof of immigration status if applicable (copy of birth or naturalization certificate, green card, status approval notice, etc.), and if not in-status, proof of having been continuously in the US for 2 years (bank records, leases, deeds, licenses, bills, receipts, letters,
birth records, church records, school records, employment records, tax payments, etc.

This does not change the state of the law, that there is no federal law requiring one to a carry an ID.
