Governor’s Order Permits Remote Ex*****on of Wills

The Covid-19/Coronavirus pandemic has made a lot of clients realize they should not have put off revising their wills. Even if a person is not currently ill, having an up-to-date will provides some peace of mind against the worst case scenario. Under normal circumstances, will ex*****on requires that the testator and the witnesses must all be present together at the same time and place and the witnesses must see the testator sign the will in person. In this time of social distancing, that could present a problem.

Recognizing the concerns about not being able to execute wills during a time when it may be needed most, Governor Pritzker issued an executive order that permits wills to be signed by means of a video and audio conference during which the testator and the witnesses can all see and hear one another. There are strict requirements for how the procedure must be conducted, but they are simple enough to adhere to. If you have been putting off signing your will, and have become concerned about whether you can do so at this time, rest assured that proper ex*****on of your will can be completed even with social distancing being the norm.

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce two new members of LawPact.

I am leaving Friday for the LawPact conference in Santiago, Chile. Our conferences are always busy and exciting -- an opportunity to catch up with colleagues who have become friends, engage with excellent speakers who motivate all of us to improve our law parctices, and learn how others work to improve their businesses. For this conference, we have chosen Santiago to acknowledge the growth and development of our Latin American member group. In addition to members from Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Costa Rica, we'll have prospective members from Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia, and even Poland. It's always a treat to see everyone and to explore a new place!

I attended the LawPact Spring Conference in New York City June 7-9. In attendance were 50 delegates from 37 member firms and 2 prospective member firms. Twelve different countries were represented.

The program covered alternative dispute resolution, with an emphasis on the international aspects of mediation and arbitration; current issues in cyber security and the issues of liability for breaches and considerations in insurance coverage for such breaches; and time management, personal productivity, and the effective use of email. Of course, there were opportunities to interact and network with the other members of LawPact. It’s a privilege to be the President of LawPact and to be associated with this great group of professionals.

I will be attending the Spring 2017 LawPact conference in Napa, California April 20-23. 38 lawyers from 30 member law firms from around the world will have the opportunity to network and share ideas about practice management. Law firm marketing will be the focus of the presentations for this conference. As President of LawPact, I am in a unique position to get to know all the members and to help guide the organization to assist member firms to improve their practices as well as providing a network of quality and trusted law firms to assist client in many jurisdictions.

I am in Savannah, Georgia attending the InPact Americas Partners Forum. Inpact International is the sister association to LawPact, and the two groups have much in common. As President of LawPact, I am meeting the leaders of Inpact to explore ways to enhance the relationship of the two groups to benefit their respective members.
