The Children's Legal Rights Journal is pleased to announce that the newest issue of Volume 41 is now live on our website at https://www.childrenslegalrightsjournal.com/childrenslegalrightsjournal/volume_41_issue_2/.

A highlight of the issue is an article authored by civil rights attorney Victor Jones, a presenter at CLRJ’s annual symposium “Juvenile (In)justice: Confronting Racial Disproportionality, Disparity, & Bias Against Children of Color.” In his article, Jones explores the impacts of exclusionary discipline during remote learning, or the virtual school-to-prison pipeline. Another highlight is an article by Professor Anita Weinberg and Lilia Valdez on the struggles of making “reasonable efforts” during the pandemic and the potential impacts on families involved in the child welfare system. The issue also contains an article by third-year law student Hannah Cholewinski comparing U.S. and German education policy in the time of COVID-19, and an article by recent Loyola law graduate Nicole Pijon that examines Illinois’ discretionary transfer statute and its disparate impact on youth of color. The latter half of the issue includes six featured practice perspectives by current Loyola law students: Symone Bullock, Hannah Cholewinski, Ariel Katz, Emma Knight, Madeleine Morris, and Nicole Pijon.

My features article presents an overview of the research conduct by Dr. Jay Miller, Associate Dean at the University of Kentucky. He conducted several studies focused on the needs of Youth in Care from their Attorneys. The article gives a voice to the youth and highlights what they need from their attorneys in order to have a successful relationship as they navigate the foster care system. It provides policy recommendations for revisions to CAPTA and recommendations for trainings that should be required for attorneys that represent youth in care.

My goal is to work in family law helping families access the resources that best fit their needs.

A fun fact about me is that my family jokes that I think I am a bionic lady because I have a titanium rod in my left leg.
