Not all workplace injuries happen in an instant. Some injuries actually develop gradually over time. These gradual injuries called repetitive trauma may still qualify for workers' compensation, but establishing a clear connection to the work environment or job duties can require a more detailed approach. An injured worker seeking benefits for repetitive trauma must prove a date the injury “manifested itself” which means the date on which both the fact of the injury and the causal relationship of the injury to the employment has become apparent to a reasonable person. The manifestation date is typically the date the condition forces the employee to seek medical care or the date the employee can no longer perform the job. Repetitive trauma is most common with carpal tunnel, spine, shoulder, knee, and elbow injuries, basically any joint.
