Today we won a major victory for the First Amendment, and dealt the Trump administration a defeat in its War on Chicago (and its War on Civil Rigths in general). A US District judge issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) reining in federal agents' use of force against protesters, clergy, and the press.
Though largely driven by the terrible violence experienced by protesters and press at the ICE Detention Facility, the TRO is not limited to Broadview, but covers federal agents in all of the Northern District of Illinois.
We congratulate all the attorneys who worked on this case from Loevy + Loevy, the Community Justice and Civil Rights Clinic at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic at the The University of Chicago Law School, First Defense Legal Aid, Protect Democracy , and ACLU of Illinois.
And we particularly congratulate our courageous plaintiffs, who are reporters, members of the clergy, and ordinary Illinois people who dared to stand up for their First Amendment rights in the face of violent oppression at Broadview and other protests, and then stood up again to fight in court for all of our First Amendment rights.
In this vital moment in American history, they should be an inspiration for all Americans.
