June 26, ten years ago, in its 5-4 Obergefell v. Hodges decision, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage across the country, ruling that state-level bans on same-sex marriage violated the due process and equal protection clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Last week Anne Shaw was honored as a board member of the Asian American Coalition of Chicago by Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas for Asian American Heritage Month.

There were consulate representatives from Taiwan, Japan, Germany, Serbia. We also had our AACC Chair Martino Tangkar from the Indonesian Community. I will be the next Co-Chair for the AACC.

The targeting and persecution of Lawyers under the Trump Administration is not only galling, it's an attack on democracy, the rule of law, and the legal system as it was founded.

"The move came as President Trump made clear he intended to continue using the levers of government to pursue his perceived foes. He signed executive orders on Wednesday to punish the law firm Susman Godfrey and to revoke security clearances for two officials who had served in his first administration, Christopher Krebs and Miles Taylor, adding to a growing number of people and entities he has targeted.

"Mr. Blanche’s memo does not mention Mr. Trump’s recent executive orders aimed at punishing certain firms, or the bar association’s criticism of those and other actions by the president. It instead refers to past “friend of the court” filings that the group has made in cases about abortion, student admissions and the First Amendment."

The punitive move comes amid the Trump administration’s pressure campaign against big law firms.

Caryn Shaw enjoyed St. Patrick’s day celebrations at the Old St. Patrick’s Siamsa na nGael event with the Chicago Symphany Orchestra. A gorgeous event filled with music dancing and laughter! Happy St. Patrick’s day!

A lovely remembrance of Tuyet Le by Mick Dumke.

She led the Asian American Institute in its shift to become Asian Americans Advancing Justice Chicago, serving as executive director of the organization for more than 18 years. Its organizing built political power by bringing different regional, national and ethnic groups together, resulting in the creation of an annual Asian American Action Day at the state capitol and an Asian American caucus in the legislature.

Tuyet and her team helped strengthen the city’s sanctuary law and pass the state’s TRUST Act; both measures block local police from assisting in federal immigration enforcement. She was a longtime member of the boards for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and for Access Living, the area’s leading advocacy organization for disabled people.

Le helped build Asian American political power and fought for immigrants, refugees and disabled people. She inspired so many people she met — including me.
