The Technori event in Chicago last week was fantastic. Great energy. Great inspiration. Great platform for new ideas. If you haven't been to one of their events, they showcase five new products. Each of the five companies "pitch" their products to the audience in five minutes or less and then open up for questions for an additional three minutes. This is a great measuring stick for all Entrepreneurs. It will help you prepare your pitch, and tighten up your answers to (anticipated) tough questions. Prepare Prepare Prepare!!!

I have a very firm belief that “hope” is the enemy of success. Hope never dreamed. Hope never finished a project. Hope never won a race. ... Put it this way, I am certain that Michael Jordan never took a shot hoping it would go in the net. He expected to make every shot, every time. And that made Jordan, Jordan. From backboards to boardrooms, Artists and Entrepreneurs are at psychological crossroads every day — Am I doing this right? Have I done enough? What can be tweaked? What is the market telling me? And on and on. I see every crossroad with extraordinary clarity: the path of expectation is for the prepared and the path of hope is for the unprepared. When you are prepared to win, hope will never cross your mind. Period. The moment you find yourself hoping for anything, step back and prepare some more. Preparation breeds expectation. Expect to win or don’t play.

This one shakes me every time I read the warning. We are all busy. We all work tirelessly. We eat for energy. We sleep to dream. We wake to live that dream. We signed up for the passion and work load … and would not want it any other way. The caveat, however, is never spend more time studying another person’s idea than you spend on your own idea. Entrepreneurs and artists have something to say to the world. They have their own voice. What another has to say may inspire as much as it may debilitate. If your vision is original, stay on your own course; otherwise, you may end up building another person’s dream....

This image exemplifies the nature of the Entrepreneur — to find victory in and between every box — on and off the playing field. When the opponent calls “Cat’s Game” — the Entrepreneur says “Not so fast” … and crosses the final X for the win. The Opponent cries foul and the Entrepreneur claims victory. Winning outside the box.

This one hit me two ways. I thought of the Steve Jobs quote: "I'm convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.” Transfer = surrender. Stay the course…. And then I thought of another Jobs quote: “[T]he only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle ... you'll know when you find it.” It then became clear to me that perseverance in finding one’s destiny is just as important as perseverance in fulfilling that destiny.

The lesson for me: Always hire someone to serve three roles: (1) the immediate need; (2) the future need (you have in mind); and (3) the need she will discover on her own (one that you never imagined). The first two serve your ego; the third serves your business. If you hire people only to prove your vision, you will lose sight of every new opportunity.
